Having recruited thousands of individuals into the Pharmaceutical Sector, Ashfield concur with the Harvard Business Review on 21st-Century Talent Spotting (June 2014) that the indicators of potential to look for are:
We agree with these findings which also reflect one of our Inspirational leaders (Sir Chay Blyth) philosophy of "selecting for character and training for competence" in round the world crews. What's your experience of competence vs. character? One of our sailing heroes is Rod Davis. Rod won Gold and Silver medals for the USA and New Zealand in the 1984 and 1992 Olympic games respectively. Since then he's been involved in several America's Cup campaigns for various syndicates and in 2005 was appointed Yachting New Zealand's Olympic Director.
We found this great article by Rod in the June edition of Seahorse Magazine. Rod shares his thoughts on Leadership and offers ten practical tips.
We're really drawn to point 8, in our experience the strongest leaders we meet are amongst other things great teachers and coaches. These attributes unlock self discovery, ownership, pride and ultimately build succession. Click here to download the full article... Have a great week Will As part of our work with Energy giant BP we've been exploring and using the 70:20:10 formula for effective learning. Here's a great clip we thought worth sharing by Charles Jennings who's respected internationally as a leading thinker and implementer of this approach https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6WX11iqmg0
As a summary here are some of his key points:
We're using this formula with increasing success across a number of clients by utilising case studies, virtual learning, action learning groups and integrated solutions developed through far closer partnerships with senior leaders, HR and L&D. If you'd be interested in hearing how then please get in touch... For some time now we've been supporting top British Sailor Phil Sharp. Phil is one of Britain’s most successful offshore sailors and claimed victory in the 2006 edition of the notorious Route du Rhum solo transat race. At his first attempt he finished the Solitaire du Figaro in 2011 as the highest Brit in the history of the race.
Phil's current focus is an entry in the Ocean Masters World Championship , the pinnacle of which is the legendary Vendée Globe. This is the only non-stop, single-handed race around the planet. Known as the Everest of Sailing, it is one of the world’s greatest challenges. To date no British sailor has won it and having worked and sailed with Phil for a number of years we and our project partners know he's capable of doing just this. We're involved for two good reasons:
Current partners include Imperial College London, Southampton University, National Composites Centre and Grantham Institute of Climate Change. If you'd be interested in learning more and supporting the project then please see the project website here and do get in touch. Our friends at Mission Performance will be running an open workshop for HR and L&D professionals on Thursday 2nd July at Marble Arch London. Changes can seem pretty messy because we have so many conflicting thoughts, feelings and urges going on in us at the same time. Jim Ewing of Executive Arts talks of the three voices of change: Ending, ReInvention and Realisation. If you're facing change at an organisational, team or individual (and we all are on a daily basis) and would be interested in exploring how tools like this can help then please get in touch by clicking here...
